Mammals in South American drylands: faunal similarity and trophic structure We compared the fauna of small mammals (less than 500 g body weight) among five major South American drylands (Atacama, Altiplano, Monte, Patagonia and Caatinga) and found considerable heterogeneity and distinctiveness in species richness and composition between these biomes...
South American drylands, heterogeneity, adaptation and convergence of small mammals Aridlands were an important scenario in the evolution of the Southamerican mammalian biota. A large proportion of the dryland species (ie. several marsupials, edentates, caviomorph and murid rodents) are not found elsewhere in the New World. In part, this degree of endemism and adaptation to xeric existence is a consequence of evolution...

Evolutionary convergence of the highly adapted desert rodent Tympanoctomys barrerae (Octodontidae) Octodontid rodents have a long evolutionary history in arid landscapes of South America. The red vizcacha rat, Tympanoctomys barrerae, is a monotypic, micro-endemic species that inhabits salt pan-sand dune habitats in west-central Argentina. Its natural history is almost unknown. We present an analysis of the ecology, morphology, behavior, and physiology of the red vizcacha rat and assess the overall degree of convergence...
Ecological observations of the red vizcacha rat Tympanoctomys barrerae in two desert habitats of Argentina La rata vizcacha colorada, Tympanoctomys barrerae, es un roedor octodóntido raro, endémico del ecosistema desértico central oeste de Argentina.
[/X://diaz1.htm Kidney structure and allometry of Argentine desert rodents (abstract)] (artículo) Two large groups of rodents inhabit South America: the hystricognaths and the murids. It has been postulated that while the former show a high degree of specialization to desert habitats, the murids are not well adapted to xeric conditions. We studied...

Una nueva visita a los octódontidos/ the octodontidae revisited.- The monophyletic and depauperate assemblage of South American octodontid
rodents has experienced an extensive adaptive radiation from above-ground dwellers to subterranean, saxicolous, and gerbil-like deserticolous life forms. Complex and
saltational chromosomal repatterning is a hallmark of octodontid evolution. Recent molecular evidence links these chromosome dynamics with quantum genome size
shifts, and probably with reticulate evolution via introgressive hybridization in the desert dwellers Tympanoctomys barrerae and Pipanacoctomys aureus. Genome duplication
represents a novel mechanism of evolution in mammals and its adaptive role is reflected in the ability of deserticolous species to colonize the extreme environment of salt flats.
Unique to Tympanoctomys is a the rigid bundle of hairs behind the upper incisors which is crucial to efficiently peel saltbush leaves and probably explains its broader
distribution relative to P. aureus. This feature, in association with other attributes (e.g., specialized kidneys, large bullae, feeding behavior) has enabled Tympanoctomys to cope with extreme environmental conditions.

Morphological traits and molecules involved in the renal concentrating ability of South American hystricognath rodentsArid environments represent a challenge for animals to maintain water balance. One way to conserve body water in mammals is to excrete concentrated urine. Different renal indices based on the development of the renal medulla are typical estimates of urine concentration....

Food storage is an important adaptation of several animal species to the temporally variable or unpredictablefood supplies that are typical of desert environments....
In desert areas, predation risk is one of the highest costs of foraging and is a major influence on animal behaviour. Several strategies are used by foragers for surviving and reproducing in desert areas. The foraging strategies of the small mammals of South American deserts are still poorly known. In this study, we investigated the foraging strategies of rodents of the Monte Desert... Locomoción y escape en roedores del desierto An important aspect of arid regions is the spatial heterogeneity resulting from differences among plant communities. There are process differences among different vegetation patches increasing variability in the functioning of the ecosystem. The purpose of this study was to estimate granivory, by studying variation of seed removal rates among patches ...

Assessing mammal responses to perturbations in temperate aridlands of ArgentinaLoss of species richness and reduced abundance have been the main responses to perturbations of small and medium-sized mammals in arid and semiarid areas. Nonetheless, some mammal species whose habitat requirements are met in disturbed patches may benefit from structural changes in the environment brought about by perturbations...
