MISION

Su objetivo principal es Desarrollar Proyectos y/o Programas de Investigación y Desarrollo en el área de Biología Agrícola, abordando las hipótesis planteadas desde las disciplinas y sub-disciplinas relacionadas con la Biología Vegetal, propendiendo a una integración multidisciplinaria entre los miembros del IBAM y otros investigadores y tecnólogos de Cuyo de modo de optimizar la utilización de recursos y garantizar los mejores resultados. Las principales líneas de trabajo estudian aspectos ecofisiológicos, genéticos, bioquímicos y moleculares de las respuesta de vid y especies hortícolas de la región a factores tanto bióticos como abióticos.

HISTORIA

El Instituto de Biología Agrícola de Mendoza (IBAM), pertenece al ámbito de las Ciencias Agrarias, de la Ingeniería y de Materiales. Si bien ya había un cierto número de investigadores de la CIC-CONICET pertenecientes a ese ámbito que tenían como sede de trabajo la Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias de la Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, llevó un tiempo poder contar con el sexto instituto del CCT CONICET Mendoza. A fines del año 2009 quedó aprobada la creación de este instituto de doble dependencia a través de un acuerdo suscripto entre la Universidad y el CONICET, y su sede funciona en la Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias.

El motivo de su creación fue principalmente la necesidad de llenar el área de vacancia zonal de contar con un Instituto donde se fomentara la generación de conocimiento en aspectos básicos de la agricultura de regadío con el fin de generar herramientas para mejorar la producción, y reducir factores de impacto negativo sobre ellos y sobre el entorno.

Está constituido por seis laboratorios: de Fisiología Vegetal, de Bioquímica Vegetal, de Biología Molecular, de Química y Biología Vegetal, de Fitopatología y de Análisis Agroalimentarios,en los que trabajan investigadores de la CIC, docentes investigadores de la Facultad, becarios de grado y postgrado, Personal de Apoyo y Administrativo.

LABORATORIO DE BIOLOGÍA Y QUÍMICA VEGETAL

Se realizan investigaciones sobre microbiología, biología molecular, química analítica, genética y fisiología vegetal en especies cultivadas, especies modelo, nativas y exóticas de Mendoza. Los temas de estudio de basan en: Genes de resistencia al nematodo del nudo de Solanaceae, Caracterización de variedades y clones de vid mediante herramientas genómicas, Desarrollo de metodologías analíticas destinadas a la extracción, purificación, preconcentración y determinación de analitos de interés agronómico y por último, Fotorreceptores controlando la fisiología y rendimiento de Vitis vinifera, Solanum licopersicum y Arabidopsis thaliana. Se encuentra sub – dividido en cuatro grupos de trabajo, los cuales se complementan brindando diferentes enfoques: Fotobiología de las plantas, Genética y Genómica de Vid, Sistemática Molecular.

LABORATORIO DE FISIOLOGÍA Y ECOLOGÍA VEGETAL

Se realizan investigaciones en áreas que involucran los procesos vitales y fenómenos fundamentales a nivel de planta y cultivos y la influencia de factores ambientales que los afectan. Por otra parte se analiza la incidencia de técnicas de manejo de cultivo, así como la aplicación exógena de hormonas vegetales y su relación con los rendimientos cuali y cuantitativos de los principales cultivos de interés regional. Otra área de estudio la constituye la Biología Molecular aplicada al análisis de expresión de genes, identificación de materiales, tolerancia a factores de estrés, etc.

LABORATORIO DE BIOLOGÍA MOLECULAR

Se realizan investigaciones sobre variabilidad genética y epigenética en especies silvestres y cultivadas de papa y ajo. Se estudian las bases moleculares de las barreras al cruzamiento en especies silvestres de papa con el fin de introducir genes de resistencia a plagas y enfermedades a las especies cultivadas y desarrollar nuevas variedades. Por otro lado, se emplean y desarrollan marcadores moleculares para la identificación de cultivares y para el mejoramiento asistido.

¨Variabilidad Genética y Epigenética¨

El género Solanum presenta una gran variabilidad genética y la papa cultivada tiene mas de 200 especies silvestres emparentadas. En el Laboratorio estamos interesados en analizar la variabilidad genética y epigenética de las especies silvestres de papa. Por otro lado, utilizamos marcadores moleculares aplicados al mejoramiento vegetal.

LABORATORIO DE BIOQUÍMICA VEGETAL

Se realizan investigaciones sobre la respuesta de vides para vino tinto, especialmente de la variedad emblemática de Argentina, Malbec, a diversos factores ambientales, tanto abiótios (radiación ultravioleta B, temperaturas extremas) como bióticos (hongos que producen enfermedades de madera y bacterias de suelo benéficas para el crecimiento de la planta) y el papel que juegan las hormonas en dichas respuestas. Se estudia la influencia de estos factores sobre expresión de genes y proteínas funcionales que modulan la producción de compuestos del metabolismo tanto primario (producción de azúcares), como secundario (compuestos polifenólicos y terpénicos), que determinan tanto las respuestas de defensa a factores adversos como la calidad del producto de cosecha expresada en contenido de azúcares y perfil de compuestos de bayas para vinificación. Estos estudios se realizan tanto en laboratorio como en condiciones de campo (viñedos comerciales), a través de convenios específicos con la industria privada. Se hace especial hincapié en la formación de RRHH de excelencia a través de la concreción de tesis de maestría y doctorales, tanto llevadas a cabo en el laboratorio como en otros organismos (INTA).

LABORATORIO DE FITOPATOLOGIA

Las actividades de investigación están dirigidas fundamentalmente al estudio de la etiología, epidemiología y manejo de distintas enfermedades de interés económico para la región en especial, vid, olivo y forestales. Especial interés recibe el estudio del manejo de enfermedades a través de métodos no tradicionales que tengan un mínimo impacto negativo sobre el medio ambiente especialmente, a través del empleo de biocontroladores, extractos vegetales, aceites esenciales y sales inorgánicas.

LABORATORIO DE ANÁLISIS AGROALIMENTARIOS

Se analizan los principios bioactivos presentes en alimentos de origen vegetal, donde se desarrollan metodologías analíticas(mediante GC y HPLC) para cuantificarlos y sintetizarlos en orden para evaluar los factores que afectan su variabilidad natural. Además se estudian las actividades biológicas que ellos determinan con el fin de obtener conocimientos en relación a cómo deben consumirse o bien optimizar su disponibilidad en los alimentos.
